About us

Hevonen Horse Feeds began distributing horse feeds and supplements in 2024, but our love for horses and our dedication to them go back much further. Our company operates as a family business, and the primary motivation behind its establishment was the case of one of our horses suffering from a serious gastric ulcer condition. At that time, suitable feeds that could have supported its recovery were not available on the Hungarian market, or were extremely difficult to obtain.
The founder, Zsófia Csonka, has been involved with horses for over 20 years. She competed as a member of the show jumping junior national team and gained international experience as a rider. She spent several years in England near Leeds at a sport yard and breeding yard, where she was trained by Nicola McLeish - a location where top sport horse breeding was also carried out and where broodmares belonging to Scott Brash were also kept. In England, equine science and the level of professional training for equine specialists are highly advanced, providing her with an excellent opportunity to deepen her knowledge in this field.
Zsófia later obtained a Master's degree in Strategic Entrepreneurship and Innovation at King's College London, after which she worked as a management consultant in Soho, primarily within the industrial manufacturing sector. She is currently studying on the Equine Science MSc programme at the University of Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, a three-year degree in Equine Science, and has already completed the Equine Science Postgraduate Certificate.
During her university studies, Zsófia acquired broad and in-depth knowledge across multiple areas of equine science. Through the following modules, among others, she gained expertise in:
– The functioning of the equine digestive system and the science of nutrition, including the determination of nutrient requirements and the formulation of tailored diets.
– Equine behaviour, welfare and ethical considerations, as well as the environmental and management factors influencing horses' mental and physical condition.
– Identifying the causes of problematic behaviours and developing appropriate solutions, including behaviour modification plans and the role of human behaviour in improving equine welfare.
– The musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology of sport horses, and the treatment and prevention of injuries and diseases, with particular emphasis on orthopaedic conditions.
– The anatomical and physiological foundations of equine reproduction, breeding methods, and the latest technologies used in horse breeding.
– Physiological adaptations to training, assessment of equine performance, and the effectiveness of different training methods.
– The application of ethology and scientific methodology in horse training and welfare, including the identification and replacement of ineffective or harmful training practices.

Zsófia is deeply committed to equine nutrition and, over the years, has completed several related training courses (CPD). In the future, she plans to pursue further research within the field of equine science in order to continue developing her professional expertise. In addition, we have substantial experience in the care of senior horses, the management of sport horses, breeding, and foal rearing.
In Zsófia's family, the love of horses spans generations. Horses have always played an important role in her father's life as well; he rides actively and competes at amateur level in dressage competitions.
One of Zsófia's lifelong favourites is Gara, to whom she owes many of her successes. Gara has competed at international level from a young age and, a few years ago, even qualified for the Open Foxhunter Championships in England. She came to Zsófia at the age of four and they have been inseparable ever since – she remains active to this day and is ridden almost every day. Gara's excellent condition is the result of a personalised feeding programme, sufficient exercise, and favourable genetic traits.
One of the key missions of Hevonen Horse Feeds is the nutrition of senior horses. Today, an increasing number of horses are reaching old age, and with this comes a growing need for specialised diets – as our aim is to ensure that our loyal, ageing companions can live long, happy and healthy lives.
For this reason, we pay particular attention during product development to ensuring that our feeds are easy to chew and digest, even for horses with dental problems. We also consider it essential to provide proper education for horse owners, especially regarding common challenges such as feeding senior horses with special dietary requirements and adapting feeding practices to dental conditions.
Our business is defined by continuous development, learning and openness – while the welfare of horses remains our highest priority. We believe that an open mindset built on sound, evidence-based knowledge is the foundation of responsible horse ownership and high-quality nutrition. This principle guides us in every aspect of our work.
